How to format your references using the The Review of International Organizations citation style

Using reference management software

Typically you don't format your citations and bibliography by hand. The easiest way is to use a reference manager:

Paperpile	The citation style is built in and you can choose it in Settings > Citation Style or Paperpile > Citation Style in Google Docs.
EndNote	Find the style here: output styles overview
Mendeley, Zotero, Papers, and others	The style is either built in or you can download a CSL file that is supported by most reference managers.
BibTeX	BibTeX styles are usually part of a LaTeX template. Check the instructions to authors if the publisher offers a LaTeX template for this journal.

Journal articles

Those examples are references to articles in scholarly journals and how they are supposed to appear in your bibliography.

Not all journals organize their published articles in volumes and issues, so these fields are optional. Some electronic journals do not provide a page range, but instead list an article identifier. In a case like this it's safe to use the article identifier instead of the page range.

A journal article with 1 author

Knoepfler, P. (2009). Journal club. A cell biologist looks at the risk and promise of a new insight into stem cells and cancer. Nature, 457(7228), 361.

A journal article with 2 authors

Yan, J., & Aldrich, R. W. (2010). LRRC26 auxiliary protein allows BK channel activation at resting voltage without calcium. Nature, 466(7305), 513–516.

A journal article with 3 authors

Fan, Y., Yu, D., & Yao, Y.-G. (2014). Tree shrew database (TreeshrewDB): a genomic knowledge base for the Chinese tree shrew. Scientific reports, 4, 7145.

A journal article with 8 or more authors

Bai, H., Li, X., Hu, C., Zhang, X., Li, J., Yan, Y., & Xi, G. (2013). Large-scale, three-dimensional, free-standing, and mesoporous metal oxide networks for high-performance photocatalysis. Scientific reports, 3, 2204.

Books and book chapters

Here are examples of references for authored and edited books as well as book chapters.

An authored book

Pietersen, W. (2010). Strategic Learning. Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

An edited book

Kő, A., & Francesconi, E. (Eds.). (2015). Electronic Government and the Information Systems Perspective: 4th International Conference, EGOVIS 2015, Valencia, Spain, September 1-3, 2015, Proceedings (1st ed. 2015., Vol. 9265). Cham: Springer International Publishing.

A chapter in an edited book

Sanford, J. F., Potkonjak, M., & Slijepcevic, S. (2012). Lack of the Golden Standard and Missing Measurements. In M. Potkonjak & S. Slijepcevic (Eds.), Localization in Wireless Networks: Foundations and Applications (pp. 65–95). New York, NY: Springer.

Web sites

Sometimes references to web sites should appear directly in the text rather than in the bibliography. Refer to the Instructions to authors for The Review of International Organizations.

Blog post

Reports

This example shows the general structure used for government reports, technical reports, and scientific reports. If you can't locate the report number then it might be better to cite the report as a book. For reports it is usually not individual people that are credited as authors, but a governmental department or agency like "U. S. Food and Drug Administration" or "National Cancer Institute".

Theses and dissertations

Theses including Ph.D. dissertations, Master's theses or Bachelor theses follow the basic format outlined below.

Doctoral dissertation

Abraham, S. R. (2015). Using Self-Monitoring and Goal Setting to Increase Swimming in Adults (Doctoral dissertation). University of South Florida, Tampa, FL.

News paper articles

Unlike scholarly journals, news papers do not usually have a volume and issue number. Instead, the full date and page number is required for a correct reference.

New York Times article

In-text citations

References should be cited in the text by name and year in parentheses:

This sentence cites one reference (Knoepfler 2009).
This sentence cites two references (Knoepfler 2009; Yan and Aldrich 2010).

Here are examples of in-text citations with multiple authors:

Two authors: (Yan and Aldrich 2010)
Three or more authors: (Bai et al. 2013)
